Beautiful!
There are many more "small church" pastors out there that deserve recognition for their faithful service for the Kingdom - Larkin Yandell for one; John Redfearn, Tip Richardson... many tributes to the faithful who serve the Lord faithfully week after week, many who also have to work a part-time secular job just to be able to feed their families - God is aware even if man isn't.

Thanks for the reflection on those who quietly but consistently serve their Lord. While Dad was not known to be quiet when truth was being distorted, he never allowed himself the indulgence of letting it become personal with those he confronted. I am thankful for the lessons he taught us and how he always responded to the call of the smaller flocks. I too am looking forward to the services on Saturday and to seeing the faces of many of those who worshipped in those out of the limelight places he served in. Travel safe!

The article misses some key points. First, the GI bill and the explosion of secondary education after WWII led to a much more competitive workplace and has created a necessity for secondary education for most of white collar America. The longer someone is in full-time education the more the demands of adulthood can be postponed. Secondly, the point of fighting WWII was to maintain our "freedoms". Freedom is a relative concept similar to the right to pursue happiness. Being a relative term, by the late 50s, early 60s it became clear that Freedom was being interpreted by the culture to mean that people can do what they want when they want as long as there is no "harm" to anyone else. The people who had the time to push this agenda were mostly those whose parents or the government were picking up their tabs. Finally, technological innovation due to the explosion of the space program made technologies such as TVs affordable for a majority of the population. Marketers are constantly being provided new tools which they are going to use to push their products. Similar to the motivational speaker convincing you that you have a problem before offering a solution, marketers convince people that they need something before telling them what they can offer.

I agree with the points in the article about some solutions to the problem, especially among Christian kids. However, in order to fix the problems on a global scale we will need some sort of all-out assault on our definition of happiness (similar to the major wars for "freedom" that have been fought - Revolutionary, Civil, WWI, WWII). War has consistently been the great shaper of society's definition of rights. Many countries in the world are already facing some of these assaults, similar to the back drops for WWI and WWII.

I think it sounds exactly like the culture we are trying to reach for Christ. Dudes in their 20s and 30s living at home, playing video games, avoiding anything that even looks like responsibility. Ok, now you have me upset... :)
